What Are the Major College Universities in Texas?

Texas, the second largest state in the country, boasts numerous colleges and universities from the flat plains of West Texas to the beaches of Port Aransas to the lush hill country in San Antonio. Nestled within the diverse landscape of Texas lie numerous major state and private education opportunities, making the state one of the most distinguished in terms of educational opportunities and quality of learning.
  1. Major State Universities

    • Texas has three major public universities: University of Texas, Texas A&M University and Texas Tech University. The University of Texas, located in Austin, has more than 51,000 students as of 2011, and students sport the iconic burnt orange and white colors to show school spirit. Texas A&M University, with 47,000 students, is located in College Station, and the university supports more than 800 student organizations. Texas Tech University, located in Lubbock, claims that, despite the 30,000 students in attendance, it offers a unique one-on-one education.

Texas A&M, in addition to its main location in College Station, has locations in Galveston, Central Texas, Commerce, Corpus Christi, Kingsville, San Antonio and Texarkana.

    Specialty Colleges and Universities

    • In addition to the traditional education that many of these schools offer, specialized educations can be found at a variety of Texas colleges and universities. Texas A&M International, for example, offers a uniquely multicultural education that focuses on international relations and business. In addition, Strayer University, with three locations in Austin, Irving and Houston, offers a unique master's program in adult education. Other notable programs include: Capitol City Careers in Austin (degree in ESL), Abilene Christian University in Abilene (Christian counseling and other religious degrees) and Mary Hardin Baylor (Baptist-based degrees in ministry).
