In 1993, South Texas College (STC) opened in McAllen, Texas. STC offers associate degrees, bachelor of applied technology, dual enrollment for early college high school classes and continuing education (e.g., career training). STC has a high Hispanic enrollment and provides multiple resources such as a world language department and Spanish courses for those studying to be translators.
Some of the Texas A & M campuses are considered minority institutions, such as those in Laredo, Corpus Christi and Kingsville. Texas A & M International University in Laredo serves as an international university that bridges Mexican and U.S. cultures. Also on the list of minority schools, Texas A & M University at Corpus Christi is called the "Island" university for its studies and research in the Gulf of Mexico. Its campus includes five academic colleges that offer bachelor, master and doctoral degrees.
Texas State Technical College at Harlingen is a two-year post-secondary minority institution. Its certificate and associate programs cover a variety of fields in agriculture, technology and telecommunications, engineering and manufacturing, health and sciences, business, commerce, service, transportation and aviation. In addition, it offers financial aid information in Spanish as well as work-study employment opportunities.
A four-year post-secondary minority institute, University of Texas at San Antonio is one of many branches that offer education to minorities, including University of Texas-Pan American. Established in 1969, University of Texas-San Antonio has 63 bachelor, 49 master and 22 doctoral degree programs, as well as eight colleges and a graduate school. As of fall 2009, University of Texas at San Antonio had 18,031 minority students that comprised 62 percent of the school's population.
One of the nation's largest historically black colleges, Texas Southern University (TSU), offers undergraduate and graduate programs. There are also more than 80 student organizations at TSU. Located in Houston, TSU has nine schools and colleges, including the Thurgood Marshall School of Law. College of Pharmacy and Health Science produced 27 percent of the state's African American pharmacists over the years. The College of Science and Technology at TSU also offers research programs.
Paul Quinn College is a faith-based school in Dallas. The four-year liberal arts college was founded by the African Methodist Episcopal Church and is listed as a private institution on the government's historically black college list. Students can earn bachelor's degrees in business and legal studies, education, science and technology. Its business program offers a bachelor of science degree in business administration, but students also focus the degree in areas such as accounting and finance.
