The Boomer Sooner chant is perhaps the most distinguished tradition at Oklahoma University. The Sooners are Oklahoma's 19 varsity sports teams; when a team enters onto the pitch the university band will begin playing the Boomer Sooner fight song which carries with it the pride of 26 national championships in both men and women's sports. Traditionally, if anyone shouts "boomer," a fan will shout back "sooner." This tradition started in 1938.
The university colors began as crimson and corn in 1895, and later became crimson and cream. Oklahoma sports teams and many students wear the traditional colors. The traditional colors are branded throughout the university from football helmets to stationary; the colors are often associated with Oklahoma University or the Sooners and worn with pride by Oklahoma students.
The Red River Rivalry is the annual college football game between Oklahoma University and Texas University. The rivalry is regarded as one of the greatest rivalies in American sports and the Red River is the boundary between the two states. Annual games between the two teams, which began in 1990, are normally intense and passionate.
The Sooner Schooner is the mascot of Oklahoma University. The mascot is a wagon pulled by two white ponies (Boomer and Sooner), and modeled on the conestoga wagon used by settlers in Oklahoma during the 1889 Land Run. The Sooner Schooner mascot first appeared in 1964 and later became the official Oklahoma mascot in 1980.
