What are the Best Christian Colleges in the Mid-South?

The area of the Mid-South, or South Central, portion of the United States has a number of Christian colleges and universities. While some group many states into the Mid-South category, it is always comprised of four primary states: Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas. Within these four states there are five Christian universities that are consistently ranked on Forbes magazine's annual list of America's Best Colleges.
  1. Oral Roberts University

    • Oral Roberts University (ORU) is located in Tulsa, Oklahoma on a sprawling, 263-acre campus. Oral Roberts is an interdenominational and Charismatic Christian university. ORU was founded in 1963 and named after its founder, evangelist Oral Roberts. Forbes has ranked the university on its list of 2009-2010 Best Colleges. ORU has nearly 4,000 undergraduate students from both the United States and abroad, and the school has been named as the largest Charismatic Christian university in the world. There are 65 different undergraduate programs for students at ORU as well as 14 master's-level programs and two doctoral programs.

    Abilene Christian University

    • Abilene Christian University (ACU) is also ranked by Forbes as one of the best rated college in the United States. The private university is affiliated with Churches of Christ. Founded in 1906 as Childers Classical Institute, Abilene Christian University has a long history of academic excellence. ACU is part of the NCAA division II Athletic Association. The university is located on a 208-acre urban campus in Abilene, Texas. ACU offers an array of undergraduate and graduate degrees and has an enrollment of approximately 5,000 students from the United States and other nations.

    Oklahoma Baptist University

    • Oklahoma Baptist University (OBU) is a highly regarded university on Forbes list of Best Universities. This academic institution was founded in 1910 and resides upon a 189-acre campus in Shawnee, Oklahoma. OBU is affiliated with the baptist church and is part of the NAIA athletic association. OBU offers 84 different areas of study, and also prides itself on its study abroad programs. OBU offers 10 bachelor's degrees for undergraduate students and two master's degrees at the OBU Graduate School, located in Oklahoma City. Yearly enrollment includes students from both the United States and abroad and there are nearly 2,000 undergraduate students annually.

    Oklahoma Wesleyan University

    • Oklahoma Wesleyan University (OWU) is a highly ranked Christian university. The University was founded in 1959 by the Wesleyan Church with the goal to provide higher educational opportunities in a Christian environment. OWU is part of the NAIA athletic association. The university offers over 35 majors and has approximately 900 students spread between its multiple campuses. The main campus is located in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, but the school has other small campuses around the state of Oklahoma.

    John Brown University

    • John Brown University (JBU) is located in Siloam Springs, Arkansas on a 200-acre campus. It was founded in 1919 and is an interdenominational Christian liberal arts college. JBU is a member of the NAIA athletic association. The university also has regional education centers located around Arkansas. JBU has nearly 2,000 undergraduate students on its main campus, and has students from around the country and the world. The university offers 47 undergraduate majors; biology and engineering have emerged as popular majors among other successful programs. JBU is also recognized for its successful student newspaper.
