What Are the Colleges in the Maury County, Tennessee Area?

Although it's a highly rural area, Maury County, Tennessee, is only a 30-minute drive south of Nashville on Interstate 65. With its proximity to the large city, the county is growing in size and the need for higher education is becoming more evident. While there's only one college and one technical school in this middle Tennessee county, there are several others within a short commute.
  1. Columbia State Community College

    • Columbia State Community College has its main campus in the Maury County city of Columbia. This community college, with a total enrollment in fall 2010 of 5,600, offers more than 50 associate's degrees such as economics, respiratory care, journalism and music both on campus and online. Through a partnership with four-year institutions such as Middle Tennessee State University, students are offered a seamless pathway to a bachelor's degree. Certification programs are also offered, in areas ranging from agricultural to veterinary technology.

    Tennessee Career Institute

    • The Tennessee Career Institute, also located in Columbia, offers training in trades such as cosmetology, nail technology, and esthetics. This school offers programs to train students in methodology and concepts, and also offers an instructor program to prepare experts for teaching. The programs are self-paced and range from as little as 300 hours for the instructor program to 1,500 hours to required to receive certification in the full cosmetology program.

    Middle Tennessee State University

    • Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) is located in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, approximately 40 miles northeast of Maury County. This school offers traditional four-year bachelor's degrees as well as master's degrees and has become one of Tennessee's fastest growing graduate schools for people earning a Ph.D. With a full-time faculty of 930 and an enrollment of 26,430 in fall 2010, MTSU offers a much larger list of degree options than any post-secondary school in the Maury County area.

    Belmont University

    • Located only 15 miles north of Maury County in Franklin, Tennessee is a satellite campus of Belmont University. It offers adult education in areas such as RN/BSN, business administration, accounting, and several other professions. Set up initially for the non-traditional learner, the campus offers mostly evening classes and meetings with professors and advisors.
