Clark Atlanta University is another historically black university within walking distance of Spelman and Morehouse colleges. The college was established in 1988 after merging the historic Atlanta University (established 1865) and Clark College (1869) together. Clark Atlanta has an annual undergraduate enrollment of about 3,300 students and around 700 graduate students. The urban campus sits on nearly 126 acres and includes several historic buildings from Clark College and Atlanta University. Like Morehouse, Clark Atlanta is a part of NCAA's Division II intercollegiate sports association.

Georgia State University is a research university located two miles from Spelman College. Georgia State is an extension of the University of Georgia's system of research colleges. The public university was founded in 1913 and offers more than 50 different degrees in 250 fields of study. More than 30,000 undergraduate and graduate students attend Georgia State, and are taught by more than 1,000 faculty members. The university occupies 34 acres of downtown Atlanta. Morris Brown College is a private historically black college located less than a mile away from Spelman College. The four-year college offers degrees concentrated in various liberal arts programs. Morris Brown was formally a part of the Atlanta University Center and the United Negro College Fund. The university's urban campus sits on 21 acres and features the Herdon Stadium, used during the 1996 Summer Olympics.
