What Are the Duties of an RA in College?

A Resident Assistant (RA) acts as a leader in a college dorm setting. An RA is usually a paid employee of the university and reports to a Resident Hall Advisor.
  1. Community

    • Dorm life can be fun and rewarding.

An RA will help develop a sense of community within the dorm through planned activities such as Homecoming events, study sessions, and social gatherings. An RA must personally know every person living on their floor. (See Reference 1)

    Leadership

    • RA's are held to high academic and moral standards. They are expected to take their leadership role seriously and put it above all other extracurricular activities. (See Reference 2)

    Counseling

    • A major component of an RA's duties is the ability to counsel and advise students on educational, social, or ethical issues. A good RA should always be available to their peers.

    Responsibilities

    • Additionally, RA's have administrative duties that include paperwork and opening or closing the dorm around school holidays. (See Reference 3)

    Safety

    • RA's are responsible for enforcing the rules, regulations, and policies of the university.
