What Colleges in Florida Offer Pharmacutical Careers?

An aging population, breakthroughs in drug development and increases in research means a greater demand for pharmaceutical professionals. The Sunshine State offers several opportunities for those pursuing an education in pharmacy and a pharmaceutical career. Along with classroom studies, students intern in hospital pharmacies or other health organizations to gain practical, hands-on experience.
  1. Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University

    • Since 1951, the College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at Florida Agricultural And Mechanical University has been preparing students for careers in the pharmaceutical field. Enrollment in the program is selective and limited. High school students applying to the pre-pharmacy undergraduate school must have a GPA of 2.75, a minimum SAT score of 1010 and at least 18 units in various subjects, including math, physics, chemistry and biology. For the doctor of pharmacy program, the primary emphasis is on pharmacokinetics and therapeutics.

    Nova Southeastern University

    • Nova Southeastern University prides itself on being "on the cutting edge of pharmacy practice." Students may intern at more than 600 clinical sites, including hospitals all over the southeastern part of the state. Nova Southeastern has campuses in Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. For the doctor of pharmacy degree, standard courses in biochemistry, anatomy, microbiology and physiology are required along with pharmaceutical science classes including pharmacokinetics, non-prescription therapies and pharmacodynamics.

    University of Florida

    • Ranked by U.S. News and World Report as one of the top colleges in the country, the University of Florida's College of Pharmacy has its main campus in Gainesville and auxiliary campuses in Orlando, Jacksonville and St. Petersburg. The smaller campuses may accommodate 50 students annually. Students enrolled in this pharmacy program may also study via distance learning. Programs include doctor of pharmacy, distance doctor of pharmacy, and the working professional doctor of pharmacy program.
