What Schools Offer Training for a Pharmacist?

Pharmacy practice, or the act of providing or creating medication to achieve positive health effects, typically requires six years of post-secondary education. The American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy recognizes over 100 colleges and universities in the United States that offer degrees in pharmacy. Prospective pharmacy students should understand everything about their school before attempting admission.
  1. Purdue University College of Pharmacy

    • Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, offers a Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences and a Doctor of Pharmacy to its students in areas such as pharmacy practice and industrial and physical pharmacy. Respectively, they take four and six years to complete. Master's of Science degrees are offered as well. Undergraduate applicants should submit class rank, overall grade point average, a SAT or ACT score, and a personal essay to be considered. Minimum requirements for admission into the College of Pharmacy's graduate program include completion of a four-year bachelor's degree, a GRE score, and letters of recommendation.

    University of Washington School of Pharmacy

    • The University of Washington, located in Seattle, Washington, offers Doctor of Pharmacy and Ph.D. degrees in areas such as medicinal chemistry, biomedical regulatory affairs, and pharmaceutics. Exceptional students can enroll in dual-degree programs. This option allows students to complete their Doctor of Pharmacy and a Ph.D. degree at the same time. General admission requirements into the School of Pharmacy include completion of an online application, two letters of recommendations, PCAT scores, and an official university transcript.

    Northeastern University School of Pharmacy

    • Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, offers Masters of Science and Ph.D. degrees in programs such as pharmacology and medicinal chemistry, and drug discovery. Students can also pursue an interdisciplinary degree which encompasses multiple pharmaceutical fields. Students at Northeastern University can also pursue a Doctor of Pharmacy. Applicants should provide a high school transcript, an evaluation from a teacher, a resume, SAT or ACT scores. Northeastern also has a $70 application fee as of February, 2011.

    University of Florida College of Pharmacy

    • The University of Florida in Gainesville offers a Doctor of Pharmacy and a Ph.D. in fields such as medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutics, and pharmacodynamics. The University of Florida also has a Working Professional Doctor of Pharmacy program. This program gives working and licensed pharmacists the opportunity to expand their knowledge in pharmacy. Prospective students must submit PCAT scores, have taken two years of high school foreign language, and complete all University of Florida online applications.
