Students interested in computer technology have three degree programs to chose from: computer information systems and management information systems for those intending to go into business, and computer science for those inclined toward research and development. A degree in mathematics is also available.
The Department of Health and Natural Sciences offers degrees in biology, chemistry, engineering, environmental studies, medical technology and physics. Nursing is available as a concentration of the biology major. According to universities.com, FMU is one of the few colleges in the nation to offer a radiochemistry concentration. This is offered with support from the National Nuclear Security Administration and graduates often work in federal agencies or the nuclear power industry.
Humanities majors are broken out into three main concentrations: communications (including concentrations in television and public relations), English (with minors available in Spanish and French) and religion & philosophy (these courses reflect the university's long historical relationship with the Baptist Church). The Department of Social Sciences offers majors in criminal justice, political science/public administration, psychology, social work and sociology. Finally, there is a music major with two concentrations: church music and jazz studies.
The School of Business offers four primary majors: accounting, business administration and marketing. In addition, the university offers a major in hospitality management in cooperation with Florida International University---a course tailored to the needs of the large hospitality industry in South Florida. Stateuniversity.com says that about half of all students are enrolled in a business major.
According to the Sun-Sentinel newspaper, FMU is ranked second in Florida and ninth in the nation in graduating African-American teachers. The School of Education offers stand-alone degrees in elementary education, biology education and exceptional student education; middle school education majors with concentrations in general science & mathematics, English & English as a second language, mathematics, music education and physical education; and secondary education with concentrations in mathematics, English and biology. All majors are part of the Florida State Approved Teacher Education Programs and, in addition to coursework, teaching internships are available for those seeking teacher certification.
Florida Memorial University's aviation science degrees are aimed at training the "future administrators and technical managers of the aerospace industry." A graduate majoring in aeronautical science with a concentration in flight education should be qualified to gain employment as an entry-level commercial pilot or a flight instructor. Actual flight training is not included in tuition and can be quite expensive. The degree in airway science qualifies graduates for positions in airline and airport management.
The majority of FMU's graduate majors are in education and designed for both the current teacher who wants to gain a higher degree and the graduate who is interested in a teaching career. Master of Science degrees are offered in elementary education, exceptional student education and reading. All students must pass an oral exam and prepare a thesis. In addition, a master's degree is offered in computer educational technology, which qualifies graduates to serve as technology facilitators. The Master of Business Administration is the only such program available in South Florida that can be completed in a year on a part-time basis, with courses offered on Friday and Saturday evenings.
