What Universities Offer Pre-Pharmacy?

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that new advances in pharmaceuticals and the continued aging of the U.S. population will lead to an 18 percent increase in the demand for pharmacists in the U.S. from 2008 through 2018. Before completing the graduate education necessary to become a pharmacist, many students choose to earn baccalaureate degrees in order to complete the prerequisite coursework for admission and improve their chances of obtaining a spot in competitive pharmacy programs. A small number of universities in the United States offer specialized programs in pre-pharmacy designed for such students.
  1. University of Miami

    • A private, nonsectarian institution, the University of Miami's 230-acre campus is in Coral Gables, Florida, a southern suburb of Miami. Home to more than 15,300 undergraduate and graduate students, the school received the 50th-place ranking among all universities in the United States from "U.S. News and World Report" in 2010.

The college offers a Bachelor of Science in Health Science degree with a concentration in pre-pharmacy. Students in the program complete coursework in English, mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, economics, biochemistry, communications, statistics, computer science, literature, philosophy and social sciences. In addition, students must also select a secondary area to minor in and can choose any field the university offers with the exception of biology. Approximately 85 percent of all students receive some type of financial aid while attending the University of Miami, according to the "2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges."

    Saint Xavier University

    • The Roman Catholic Church founded Saint Xavier University in 1846 in Chicago, Illinois. Among the programs available for the more than 3,100 undergraduate students at the college is an intensive pre-pharmacy program offered in conjunction with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry. Students complete courses in biochemistry, organic and analytical chemistry, physics, calculus and cell biology. Majors in the program meet regularly with the university's pre-pharmacy committee, which monitors their performance and makes recommendations about what courses, volunteer experiences and activities will improve the students' chances at receiving admission to pharmacy school.

The University of Illinois at Chicago's School of Pharmacy has approved the pre-pharmacy program at Saint Xavier as satisfactory for its admissions requirements; however, the university does not guarantee admission for Saint Xavier students. Around 88 percent of freshmen and 82 percent of continuing students benefit from some form of financial aid, explains the "2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges."
