Colleges in the New York City Area

For students who want to study near New York City without actually having to live or commute there, a good selection of colleges and universities exist in the immediate area. These include two to the west of the city in in New Jersey and another to the east on Long Island. Both private and public universities are also available near New York.
  1. Seton Hall University

    • Seton Hall University, which is 14 miles from New York City, is on a 58-acre campus in the town of South Orange, New Jersey. Seton Hall has approximately 10,000 students, eight schools and offers more than 40 majors. Founded in 1856, Seton Hall is a four-year private Catholic University. Approximately 80 percent of its students live on campus. The university competes in 14 NCAA Division I sports and is a member of the Big East Conference. It also has three club sports and 27 Greek societies. Well known for its law program, Seton Hall University is the oldest diocesan university in the country. Business, nursing and education are some more of its popular majors.

    Montclair State University

    • Founded in 1908, Montclair State University is 14 miles from New York City on a 246-acre campus in New Jersey. It has a full scope of undergraduate and graduate programs. This public university has nearly 300 majors, minors, concentrations and certificate programs. Several doctorate programs are available. It has a full array of both men's and women's athletic teams along with extracurricular activities and research facilities. More than 18,000 students attend Montclair, including approximately 4,000 postgraduates. It is the second-largest college in New Jersey, second to only Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey.

    Hofstra University

    • Hofstra University is approximately 23 miles east of New York City on Long Island. The largest private college on Long Island, Hofstra got its start in 1937 and features around 150 undergraduate and 160 graduate programs in field such as liberal arts and sciences, business, communication, and education and health and human services. It also has a school of law and honors studies. Hofstra University has a student-faculty ratio of 14 to one. The university is known for organizing and hosting international academic conferences, and holds an annual Shakespeare festival. Located on a 240-acre campus in Hempstead, Hofstra competes on the NCAA Division I in athletics.
