Christian Colleges in New York City

There are over fifty institutions of higher learning in the New York City area. Several have religious roots and maintain strong ties to specific denominations and faiths. Most of them are connected with either Judaism or Christianity. The Christian-based schools range from small liberal arts colleges to seminaries and major universities.
  1. The General Theological Seminary

    • The General Theological Seminary (GTS) is affiliated with the Episcopal Church. It was founded in 1817 and is the oldest Episcopal seminary in the country. The school is located on Manhattan's West side in the vibrant Chelsea neighborhood. GTS offers several types of Master's degrees, two post-baccalaureate programs and a Doctor of Theology (Th.D.) degree.

    The King's College

    • The King's College, founded in 1938, is located on two floors of the historic Empire State Building. The mission of the small liberal arts college states that the school is committed "to the truths of Christianity and a biblical worldview." The school offers two types of undergraduate degrees, a bachelor of arts and a bachelor of science in business management.

    Fordham University

    • Fordham University, established in 1841, is associated with the Jesuit order of Catholic priests. However, the school operates as an independent university and has a wide-ranging non-discrimination policy. Fordham's academic programs are highly respected and it offers numerous programs for undergraduates and graduate students. The business and law schools are among the best in the nation. The school's athletic programs compete at the Division I level in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

    The Union Theological Seminary

    • The prestigious Union Theological Seminary is a Christian-based multi-denominational seminary. Its mission describes it as evangelical yet progressive in its approach to educating ministers. It is a center of ecumenism, advocating for unity among all religions of the world. Founded in 1836, it is currently located on the upper West side of Manhattan and affiliated with Columbia University. Its campus features English Gothic architecture including a famous tower. While the school's main focus is its Master of Divinity program, it also offers other degrees including a Master of Science in Social Work, a Master of Arts, a Master of Sacred Theology and a Ph.D. program.

    St. John's University

    • St. John's University is a large Catholic University that is known not only for its academics but also for its successful athletic programs. The school, founded in 1870 by the Vincentians, is spread across three campuses in Queens, Staten Island and Manhattan. It offers over 100 majors in six departments. It also has a law school. It is a Division I school and competes in the Big East Conference.
