The Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences offers students the opportunity to complete clinical requirements at Florida Hospital, also located in Orlando. The Seventh-day Adventist Church operates the hospital and college. Prospective x-ray techs complete academic training through the associate-level radiography program. Applicants must have a 2.50 GPA from high school or completion of 12 credits at an accredited college. They also must complete college algebra prior to starting the program. Applicants need to submit two recommendations, as well. They must submit an essay detailing their interest in the career and in attending a faith-based institution. The ACT score requirement of 19 is not required for those who have earned 24 college credits.
Orlando's Valencia Community College also offers an associate's degree in radiography. The program accepts 18 students annually, and they complete clinical experiences in partner facilities, including the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and the Veterans' Administration Outpatient Clinic. In addition to meeting the general admissions requirements for the college, applicants to the radiography program need to have a 2.50 GPA on previous coursework and complete BSC 2093C Human Anatomy and Physiology I with at least a "C." Applicants' healthcare-related work history or volunteer work also will be considered.
Located about 50 minutes east of Orlando, Brevard Community College in Cocoa offers an associate's degree of science in radiography. This 77-credit hour program requires students to participate in hospital and lab experiences while completing coursework. Applicants must meet the college's general admission requirements and also submit a separate application to the radiography department. They must provide official transcripts from all high schools and colleges attended, as well as work experience documentation. Prospective students also must take the Test for Adult Basic Education, because the score is used in the decision-making process for program admission.
The Division of Medical Quality Assurance of the Department of Health handles x-ray tech licensure in Florida. Techs applying for licensure through examination must be at least 18, have good moral character and be graduates of a two-year accredited academic program. They also must complete an HIV/AIDS education course and submit to a background check, if they have a criminal history.
