Central Florida Schools for Anthropology

Anthropology is the study of all aspects of human behavior that includes historical, cultural, biological and linguistic research. According to the American Anthropological Association, most anthropologists fall under one of four disciplines: archaeology, biological anthropology, linguistic anthropology or sociocultural anthropology. Receiving an undergraduate or graduate degree in anthropology is exciting and worthwhile, opening up career choices in business, research, teaching, advocacy and public service.

    • The University of Florida is the largest university in the state of Florida and the fourth largest in the nation. The university consistently ranks as one of the top institutes of educational excellence in the country. The campus encompasses 2,000 acres and more than 900 buildings. The University of Florida Department of Anthropology offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees in the major subfields of sociocultural, archaeological, biological and linguistic anthropology. The Department has gained national prominence for its academic and applied research in forensic anthropology, cultural heritage management, medical anthropology and historical ecology.

    University of South Florida

    • The main research campus of the University of South Florida is located in Tampa, west-central Florida. Federal funds and grants for research have increased dramatically since 2000, making the University of South Florida one of the fastest growing research educational institutes in the United States. The university is committed to providing high-quality education to its students. The University of South Florida Department of Anthropology offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in applied anthropology. Students have the opportunity to attend the Department's field school in Florida every summer. The distinct archaeological methods in applied research learned at the field school include mapping, survey, geophysical survey, testing and small-scale excavation.

    University of Central Florida

    • The University of Central Florida is a modern facility located in Orlando. The main campus encompasses 1,415 acres surrounded by lakes, woodlands and an arboretum. The University of Central Florida Department of Anthropology offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees in anthropology. The anthropology undergraduate program covers the subfields of cultural anthropology, archaeology, physical anthropology and linguistics. An anthropology major is afforded an opportunity to participate in archaeological excavations relative to the Maya culture in Belize, Central America. In the graduate program, students focus on research studies and projects in the specialized subfields of anthropology.
