Example of a Reference in PDF Format

When writing academic papers, you must typically follow appropriate style guidelines, depending on your curriculum. Although various style manuals are adhered to by different schools, the two main styles followed are the Modern Language Association, or MLA, and the American Psychological Association, or APA. Learn how to set up an entry for a reference in portable document file, or PDF, format.
  1. PDF Files

    • Many people prefer to save documents as PDF files because they are easy to publish, and they open on most any computer. You don't need to understand Web design and coding to make a PDF file, and Web designers can easily add PDF documents to their Web pages.

    APA

    • The following is an example of an APA-formatted reference entry for a PDF document: This is a report/document found on the Web written by a nongovernmental organization with no publication date, according to the Northern Michigan University Olson Library:

Accreditation Commission for Programs in Hospitality Administration. (n.d.). Handbook of accreditation. Retrieved from http://www.acpha-cahm.org/forms/acpha/acphahandbook04.pdf.

Per APA, indent the entry starting with the second line, and italicize the handbook name.

    MLA

    • The following is an example of a MLA-formatted reference entry for a PDF document: This is a stand-alone website published by state government or a nonprofit organization with no publication date, according to NoodleTools.

"Alligator Information: Frequently Asked Questions about Alligators." Brazos Bend State Park Volunteer Organization. Brazos Bend State Park Volunteer Organization, n.d. Web. 4 Mar. 2010. <http://www.brazosbend.org/animals/factsheets/Alligator/alligatorfacts.pdf>.

Per MLA, indent the first line of the entry, and italicize the name of the organization as the writer.
