Kappa Fraternities in Texas Universities or Colleges

The words "college fraternity" conjure up an image of drinking, socializing and partying in the minds of many people. While college fraternities do provide such entertainment outlets for their members, they may also engage in more serious endeavors, such as fundraising for causes. And, fraternities also serve to provide a lifelong network of contacts for their members. Texas, no less than other states, has a number of fraternities, including chapters of various Kappa fraternities.
  1. Texas Tech University

    • Phi Kappi Psi is one of the oldest national fraternities, with the first chapter set up in the mid 1800s. Texas Tech University's Phi Kappa Psi fraternity developed from the Centaur Club that was established in 1929. This is the second chapter of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity in the state. The fraternity touts its well-located fraternity house, which at Texas Tech are called lodges. The chapter considers its members to be a well-balanced group whose members have a wide range of interests interests, so that it cannot be characterized as a grouping of say, atheletes or bookworms.

    Texas A&M University

    • Texas A&M's Pi Kappa Phi chapter is a part of a fraternity group that was first established in 1904 in Charleston, S.C. The fraternity is proud to have established "Push" a non-profit undertaking that provides service opportunities to fraternity members. For instance, members of the Texas A&M chapter participate in activities to serve people with disabilities. One such activity was a bike ride across America in the summer of 2010. The ride served to raise money for people with disabilities. The fraternity has also participated in construction projects for such causes.

    University of Texas

    • The University of Texas Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity touts itself as the first black fraternity at the university. Membership is open to full-time students of UTA with a minimum grade point average of 2.3. In order to be eligible for membership, this fraternity also expects prospective members to have put in 10 hours of work in community service and provide five letters of recommendation. One of the aims of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity is to inspire public service in its members.

    Benefits of Fraternity Membership

    • Not only do fraternity members enjoy the benefits of socializing while on campus, but the membership provides an avenue to make lifelong connections. These social and professional networks of fraternity brothers continue to draw on the ties they formed while on campus. Fraternities hold reunions and activities that help members reconnect and keep in touch. Keeping this in mind, Phi Kappa Psi, for instance, has adopted the theme of continuing friendship until death as one of its mottos.
