Colleges of Social Science in Griffin, Georgia

Griffin is a modest city in west-central Georgia, about halfway between Macon and Atlanta. Though there are several schools in and around Griffin, only one within a 20-mile radius offers courses in the social sciences. There are several additional options within a 40-mile range, primarily in and around the two larger cities.
  1. Clayton State University

    • The social sciences are a broad umbrella group of academic studies, focusing on the interactions within a society. Sociology, anthropology, psychology, political science, education and economics, among others, are considered to belong to this category. The closest school to Griffin with degrees in the social sciences is Clayton State, which is 20 miles away in Morrow. The school offers undergraduate and graduate degrees, in subjects such as psychology, sociology and political science. Clayton State's physical proximity to national and state archives is of special interest, and the school offers a graduate degree in archival studies.

    Agnes Scott College

    • Located in the Atlanta suburb of Decatur, about 35 miles from Griffin, Agnes Scott is a small liberal-arts college for women. With total enrollment of under 1,000 students and an average class size of 16 for the 2010/2011 academic year, the school is able to provide a high level of individual attention to its students. ASC's undergraduate program is rich in the social sciences, providing degrees in anthropology/sociology, psychology, political science, economics and Africana, among others.

    Colleges in Macon

    • Macon is approximately 40 miles southeast of Griffin. Motivated students from the Griffin area could commute here daily or could take up residence in the larger city and easily visit home on weekends. Schools in Macon offering degrees in the social sciences include Wesleyan College, the world's oldest college for women; Mercer University, a liberal-arts school with undergraduate and graduate degrees in the social sciences; and Macon State College, the largest undergraduate college in the central region of the state.

    Colleges in Atlanta

    • Atlanta is approximately 40 miles north of Griffin and is equally rich in educational choices. Like Macon, students who choose to live here could easily travel home to Griffin for Mom's cooking. Schools in Atlanta offering degrees in the social sciences include Oglethorpe University, a selective liberal-arts school with a 2010/2011 enrollment of 1,100; Spelman College, an historically black college for women; and Morehouse College, an historically black college for men that includes among its alumni the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and filmmaker Spike Lee.
