Most BA programs in early childhood education require students to take several core courses. These include courses in early childhood theory and practice, language and literacy, ethics and legal issues, curriculum design, health and nutrition, literacy, numeracy and educational technology, play and observation, assessment and planning. Some fieldwork may also be required. The exact number of core courses required can vary from one university to another, but is generally around 45 semester hours.
In addition to the core requirements, majors in early childhood education must also take a certain number of elective courses. The exact number and type of these courses varies from university to university. Electives may include courses in infant and toddler care, computers in the classroom, literature for children, music, drama and dance for young children, program administration, conflict resolution, financial management and leadership. Early education majors at some universities can chose to concentrate in a particular area, such as teacher education or early childhood administration, and this will affect the elective courses they are required to take.
In addition to the core courses and electives, students who want to earn a BA or major in early childhood education are also generally required to take several courses in topics such as communication, literature, fine arts, math, science and history. These courses provide students with a strong foundation in basic knowledge and critical thinking skills. Some universities may also require students to take courses in psychology and child development as part of their early childhood major.
Most universities that offer a major in early childhood education require students to complete at least one semester of student teaching. This is usually completed in the final year. Students will usually be assisted in finding a place at a local school or daycare center and will be able to observe, as well as deliver their own lessons. Some universities, such as DePaul, require early childhood education majors to student teach in several different settings, such as kindergarten, second grade, special education and in a multicultural setting.
