    • The Pennsylvania College of Technology offers an associate of applied science degree with a major in early childhood education. Applicants are required to undergo testing in English, reading and math skills. This program consists of four semesters of full-time study. Course topics include child development, language arts in early childhood education, child psychology, early childhood health and nutrition, educational methods and materials, special needs children and human services administration. A practicum course in a professional setting is also required.

    University of Pittsburgh

    • The School of Education at the University of Pittsburgh provides two training programs in early childhood education. The three-semester early childhood education instructional certificate prepares students to acquire state certification permitting them to teach young children from birth until the age of eight. Applicants should have an undergraduate degree with an overall GPA of 3.0 or better. Course requirements include reading and language development, educational methods for pre-schoolers and elementary children, teaching methods for disabled children, community resources and practical field experience. The Master of Education program is designed for graduates of an early childhood education certificate or degree program. Course topics include education and human development, research methods, reading and language development, teaching methodology, special education and community resources.

    Delaware County Community College

    • Delaware County Community College provides an associate in applied science degree in early childhood education that provides students with the opportunity to observe and work with children at the on-campus child care center. This program consists of four semesters of study in early childhood education principles, teaching methods and materials, child development, child behavior, curriculum development, program planning, culture differences, family sociology, health and nutrition, human relations and applied psychology. A professional practicum and field experiences are also required.

    • The Department of Social and Behavioral Science at Bucks County Community College provides an associate of arts degree with a major in early childhood education. This two-year program trains students to work as assistant teachers in private kindergarten classrooms, nursery schools and day care programs. Course requirements include educational foundations, the organization and management of childhood education, behavioral observation, teaching methods in science and math, language development, nutrition, children's literature, human growth and development, educational psychology and professional practice.
