Early Childhood Education Colleges in New York

Teachers educate people at all ages and stages of life. Those who are credentialed as early childhood educators teach the youngest, from birth to second grade. Prospective early childhood educators looking to attend school in the state of New York have a number of colleges from which to choose.

    • The Teachers Colleg at Columbia University always ranks highly in the "US News and World Report" college rankings for schools of education; its graduate program placed second only to Vanderbilt University in the 2010 rankings. Teachers College offers bachelor's degrees in both Early Childhood Education and Early Childhood Special Education. The College Board reports that average tuition in Fall 2009 cost $41,316 per year and that Columbia University had a total undergraduate enrollment of 5,766 students at that time. The application process for the Teachers College now requires online submission of materials.

    New York University (Steinhardt)

    • New York University's Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development also finished well in the "US News and World Report" rankings, with its graduate program earning a place in the top 20 schools. NYU offers degrees in Early Childhood Education, as well as Early Childhood and Special Education. The College Board reports a total undergraduate enrollment of 21,638 for all of New York University; Steinhardt boasts a total enrollment of 2,434 students. According to the university's website, cost of attendance (including room and board) in Fall 2009 was $51,991; the average financial aid package for incoming freshmen was $29, 560.

    Hofstra University

    • Hofstra University, located about 25 miles east of New York City, offers a bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education and a dual certification in Early Childhood Education and Childhood Education. A private, nonsectarian school, Hofstra's Fall 2009 total enrollment numbered 12,100 students, of whom full-time undergraduates were 7,327. The College Board estimates the Fall 2010 annual cost of attendance at $47,332; the average financial aid package totals $17,607.

    Canisius College

    • Canisius College, in Buffalo, offers a bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education, as well as two dual certification programs: Early and Childhood Education, and Early and Special Education. Enrollment in 2009, according to the College Board, included 3,196 undergraduates and 1,578 graduate students. The College Board estimates the Fall 2010 cost of attendance at $30,777; the average financial aid package covers $26,843.
