How to Cite a Government Document in AMA Format

The American Medical Association (AMA) has laid out specific guidelines for the citation of references and sources used to write papers and articles. AMA format is most commonly used by students in medical disciplines and by writers for professional journals that serve the medical community. When adhering to AMA guidelines, government documents should be cited in the following manner.

  List the name of the authoring organization, followed by a period. For example:
  
  United States Department of Defense.

  List the title of the document in italics, followed by a period. For example:
  
  Analysis of the Efficacy of Long-Range Patriot Missiles.

  List the edition number, if applicable. If there is no edition number, skip to Step 4. For example:
  
  3rd ed.

  List the city of publication, followed by a colon. For example:
  
  Washington, DC:

  List the publisher, followed by a semicolon. For example:

  List the year of publication, followed by a period. For example:
