How to Cite an Article From CNN

CNN is a television cable news network, but also publishes daily news stories on an Internet website. If you use information from a CNN article as a source in your paper, you must include information about the article in a reference list at the end of your paper. The exact format your reference should take will depend on whether your professor has requested that you adhere to Modern Language Association (MLA) or American Psychological Association (APA) guidelines.

      List the author's last name, a comma, the author's first name and a period. For example:

      Zakaria, Fareed.

      List the title of the article in quotation marks. Follow the title with a period that falls within the quotation marks. For example:

      "A Tale of Two Economies: How to Save the American Worker."

      List the title of the website in italics, followed by a period. For example:

      cnn.com.

      List the name of the publisher, followed by a comma. In this case, this information should appear as follows:

      CNN,

      List the date of publication in a day-month-year format, followed by a period. Months other than May should be abbreviated to three letters. For example:

      17 Apr. 2011.

      List the medium of publication, followed by a period. When citing an Internet article, this should appear as follows:

      MLA style no longer requires the use of URLs, but if you would like to include the web address, do so enclosed in angle brackets directly underneath your citation. For example:

      Zakaria, Fareed. "A Tale of Two Economies: How to Save the American Worker." cnn.com. CNN, 17 Apr. 2011. Web. 11 May 2011.

    Citing CNN in APA Format

      List the date of publication in a year, month day format. This should be enclosed in parentheses and followed by a period that falls outside the parentheses. For example:

      List the title of the article, followed by a period. According to APA style, only the first letter of the title should be capitalized. If there is a subtitle, the first letter of the subtitle should also be capitalized, as should any proper nouns. For example:
