How to Cite an Advertisement from a Website

Advertising is a unique form of reference material. It can show your audience how people and corporations thought about themselves and the products they were using at a particular point in history. A growing number of companies, as of 2011, have been using website advertising to promote their products or services; just like print advertising, you can cite online advertisements in your research paper. However, website advertisements do not stay posted for very long, so make sure you note the exact date you viewed the ad.

Instructions

    • 1

List the name of the company that is promoting the products or services first, followed by a period. For example, if Apple is promoting an iPad, simply list "Apple." As another example, if Amazon is advertising the Kindle, you would list "Amazon." There is no need to list the actual product being advertised.

    • 2

Insert the word "Advertisement" after you have named the company, followed by a period.

    • 3

List the website's name where you found the advertisement, followed by a period. Italicize the name.

    • 4

List the name of the sponsoring company of the website, followed by a comma. For example, if you are using an online ad on The New York Times website, include The New York Times Company as the sponsoring company.

    • 5

Insert the date the advertisement was created if you can find this information, followed by a period. If you can't find this information, insert "n.d.," which means "no date given."

    • 6

Insert the word "Web," followed by a period to show that you found the advertisement online. There is no need to list the URL of the website.

    • 7

List the date you viewed the advertisement, followed by a period.
