How to Transfer Military Education Benefits

One of the most requested military benefits is the transfer of the education benefits from service members to family members, as stated by the Department of Defense. The benefits transfer policy was left up to each individual branch of the military under the Montgomery GI Bill, and the Navy and Marine Corps did not allow any transfer of benefits under this bill. The Post 9/11 GI Bill changed that, and now any member of the Armed Forces eligible for the Post 9/11 GI Bill can transfer their education benefits to his spouse or children.

Service members eligible for retirement between August 1, 2010 and August 1, 2011 have a requirement of 2 years additional service after the transfer of benefits is approved, and Service Members eligible for retirement between August 1, 2011 and August 1, 2012 must complete an additional 3 years of service after the transfer of benefits is approved.

Ensure your beneficiary is eligible for the education benefit transfer. Your spouse, one or more of your children or any combination of your children and spouse are eligible for a transfer of your education benefits. The family member or members receiving the benefit transfer must be enrolled in the Defense Eligibility Enrollment Reporting System at the time of the transfer in order to receive the transferred education benefits.

Transfer the benefits online. Log on to the Department of Defense Transferability of Education Benefits website and look at the list of your family members eligible to receive benefits. If the name is grayed out, that family member is not eligible for the transfer of benefits. Click on the family member you want to transfer your benefits to and enter a start date, end date and the number of months you wish to transfer to that family member.

Track the status of your education benefit transfer. Check back on the web page to see if your request is approved. If it is approved, you will see the status change from "submitted" to "approved", and the date in the "date of status" section change to the date when the request was submitted. Each family member with transferred benefits will need to submit a VA form 22-1900e online to receive their certificate of eligibility, which they need to use the education benefits.
