How to Use the GI Bill in Mississippi

Residents of Mississippi, who have been honorably discharged from a branch of the U.S. armed forces, or those who are currently serving, can utilize GI Bill benefits to pay for tuition and expenses while attending an approved college or university. Those who actively serve or have served at least 90 days since September 11, 2001 are eligible for Post-9-11 GI Bill benefits. The Montgomery GI Bill is available for all active duty members of the U.S. Armed Forces and to reservists with a six-year service obligation. It also helps enrolled members earn a monthly educational benefit.

Collect information regarding the length of all military service and locations. Gather the necessary paperwork that records any additional self-made contributions to the GI Benefit program. Apply to a school in Mississippi that accepts GI Bill benefits for tuition aid purposes. Once accepted, check to see if the school has a specialized military assistance that deals solely with enrolling retired and active duty military personnel. These campus offices are helpful in assisting the military student with all initial and recurring filings. They can also assist with routing documentation requests to the proper military branch and unit records office. If not, then the certifying officer that will assist with benefits usage will be accessible through the school's normal financial aid office.

Fill out form 22-1990 as requested by the financial aid office of the school where acceptance has been offered. Applications can be filled out in paper form, which are available through the Mississippi Veteran's Affairs office, or online at the U.S. Veteran's Affairs website. An application form can also be requested by mail by calling 1-888-GI-BILL-1 (1-888-442-4551). This requests the aid for use at the particular school and a certifying officer can assist the enrolling military service person or veteran with this application process if necessary.

Fill out the necessary forms for acceptance and disbursement of any monthly benefits once benefits are active and scheduled for the approaching school year. Provide the attending school where benefits will be used with the enrolling student's current bank information, such as account number and bank routing number, if direct deposit is offered. Electronically disbursed benefits are often quickest to process, and provide a convenient method for distribution of any GI Bill assistance that will be used for expenses other than tuition.
