How to Use Your Husband's GI Bill for College

The original "GI Bill" was a piece of legislation that offered support for the returning soldiers of World War II. With the passage of the Post 9/11 GI bill, today's military personnel have access to a similar set of benefits. The bill will pay for up to 36 months of higher education, covering tuition costs equal to the maximum in-state tuition at a public college in the recipient's state. It also provides a stipend for expenses. The Post 9/11 GI Bill also allows unused education benefits to be transferred from a soldier to his spouse.

Instructions

Determine whether your husband is eligible to apply. He must still be in the service when he applies to transfer the benefits. He must have either served six years and be prepared to serve four more, or have already served 10 years with a commitment to serve up to the maximum that service policy allows. He can also make the transfer if he is eligible to retire, which comes after 20 years of service. Retirees who wish to retire before August of 2011 must commit to two extra years of service after the transfer; those eligible to retire before August 2012 must commit to three years extra service.

Submit the application to transfer benefits then wait for approval from the Department of Defense.

    • 3

Fill out and submit VA Form 22-1990e after you have received approval for the transfer of benefits.

    • 4

Locate the school you wish to attend. You will need to check with them as to whether their tuition is equal to or less than the maximum in-state rate at public schools. If it is, the GI Bill will cover you. If it is not, check if they participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program, which covers the difference.

Sit down with the certifying officer at the school you have chosen. They can guide you through the application process and ensure that all the paperwork is submitted properly. You will still need to go through the school's application process and be offered admission. Once this happens, you can use your benefits to pay the tuition.
