How to Apply for a New GI Bill

Members of the active duty forces of the United States military and their immediate family members may be eligible to receive the benefits offered by the GI Bill. Reserve and National Guard Armed Forces may also be eligible for these benefits. The GI Bill benefits can be used to pay for educational resources and additional training. If you would like to apply for the new GI Bill benefits, there is a simple and straightforward process to do so.

      Complete the application process for the school or university where you wish to further your education or training. The school or university must be approved by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The admissions department of the school or your local VA office can assist you in finding out if the institution you're applying to is approved or not.

      Download and complete the Department of Veterans Affairs' Application for VA Education Benefits, located in the resource section below. This form includes details about your military service, your education and employment background and your personal contact information.

      Call the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs at 1-888-442-4551 if you don't wish to download the Application for VA Education Benefits from the Internet. They will send you a copy. You can also speak with the Registrar's office or Financial Aid office at the institution you're applying to. They frequently have copies of the form on hand and can help you fill them out.

      Submit the Application for VA Education Benefits to apply for the new GI Bill benefits. The school you chose will most likely submit this form on your behalf. Submit it to the Registrar's office or Financial Aid office. If you haven't applied to a school yet or if you haven't made a final decision, you can send the form in to your VA Regional Office. You will usually hear back within four to eight weeks about whether or not you were accepted.
