How to Apply for a Student Loan in BC

BC student loans are funded by the provincial government. It works together with the Canadian government to help pay your tuition while you are in school. Your financial needs will be calculated and when you apply for funding through Student Aid BC, your application will be sent to both the provincial and federal loan agencies. If you do not qualify for government student loans, you may be able to apply for a loan at your bank.

      Confirm that your school is eligible for funding. All BC colleges and universities can get funding through BC loans but some private schools do not qualify. If you are unsure, Student Aid BC can help you determine if your school is eligible.

      Verify that you are eligible for student loans. To qualify you must be a Canadian citizen, landed immigrant or have protected status, have lived in BC for the last 12 consecutive months, be taking at least 60% of a full course load and demonstrate financial need (this is done by providing information about savings account, parental contribution, cost of living, or tuition fees). If this is not your first year studying, you need to show you have satisfactory scholastic standing. This is set by the individual institution but you must not have missed more than 10 consecutive days of classes or dropped below the required course load of 60%.

      Apply online through Student Aid BC. You will need to provide a budget worksheet and submit copies of your enrollment forms.

      Wait for your assessment. This can take several weeks. You will receive your paperwork in the mail and will need to sign an agreement. If you have been denied you can appeal if there has been a change in your , you can appeal through Student Aid BC. An appeal can take up to 6 weeks.

      Receive your loan by confirming your identity and enrollment. BC institutions must confirm your enrollment before a loan will be released. You do need to confirm your identity at a Canada Post outlet where you show an identifying documentation and a void check. Postal staff will confirm your information and forward the signed agreement to the BC Student Loan Services Bureau. Once it has received this agreement the money will be deposited into your bank account.
