How to Apply for an Unsubsidized Stafford Loan

Stafford loans, which are available for both undergraduate and graduate students, are federal loans. They have a fixed interest rate and most students qualify, regardless of their credit rating. Students are not required to make payments while they are still in school. A subsidized Stafford loan is awarded on the basis of a student's financial need, while an unsubsidized loan is not, according to StaffordLoan.com. Unsubsidized loans accrue interest from the date of disbursement, while subsidized loans do not accrue interest until the student begins to repay the loan.

Evaluate whether you are eligible for a Stafford loan. Have you submitted a Free Application for Federal Student Aid, which is available from the Department of Education? Are you a U.S. citizen or permanent resident? Will you be enrolled in school at least half time? Are you accepted to a school that is in the Federal Family Education Loan Program? (Contact your admissions office if you are unsure.) If you've answered yes to all these questions, you may apply for a Stafford loan. Additionally, if you've already had an education loan, you must not be in default.
