How to Apply for Medical Residency

Medical students who graduate medical school and successfully fulfill their medical internship requirement must apply for a medical residency with a hospital. Medical residency is part of the graduate medical training required to become a physician. Residents practice medicine under the scrutiny of fully licensed and experienced doctors; the benefit of a residency is to practice hands-on care with patients to perfect their diagnostic skills. The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) hosts a program called Electronic Residency Application Services (ERAS) to assist you in applying for your residency.

  Apply for residency using the AAMC's ERAS service. Go to the website and click the "Sign In" link at the top of the page to create an account. Click "Register for an AAMC Account" and provide your email address, name, contact information and create a password.

  Complete the residency application once you are logged into your account. You must provide information regarding your identity, college degrees and internship information; this information includes your name, date of birth, Social Security number, graduate degrees, internship hospital or clinic and contact information.

  View the list of available residencies in different cities, states and hospitals. Choose several to apply for, submit your application and wait to receive notification of your acceptance.
