How to Cite Sources From a Newspaper on a Library Database

When a newspaper is used as a source in an academic paper, the article, author and publication must be cited. This often involves an online database accessed through your academic institution. Cite the article in your paper's footnotes, end notes, works cited section or bibliography, following the Chicago style, sometimes known as Kate Turabian standard for research papers.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your research paper in Microsoft Word.

    • 2

Click your cursor at the end of the sentence in which you mentioned the material cited, clicking directly after the period.

    • 3

Click the "References" tab on your toolbar, followed by the "Insert Footnote" button. A superscript number will appear after the period, and your cursor will jump down to a corresponding number in your footnote. Cite the newspaper article there.

    • 4

Enter the standard Turabian format for a newspaper article: Mary N. Ackers, "A New Day in the City," New York Gazette, July 2, 1989, Features section, Northwest edition, in the Midian Online News Library, http://www.midian.edu (accessed December 24, 2004).
