How to Change Majors After Acceptance

When you are accepted to college as a first time student, you are not required to immediately choose a major. The reason for this is you are required to take 36 hours of prerequisite classes that are required for your Associate's Degree. Once you have taken these classes, you should choose a major so you can take the required courses to be accepted into the program you wish to apply for and obtain your next degree. If you want to change majors as a transfer student, you must contact an adviser at your college; the process differs from school to school.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the Dean's office of the major you want to switch to. If you are a business student and you want to change your major to education, you must visit the office of the Dean of Education.

    • 2

Inform an adviser at the Dean's office that you want to change your major and provide the adviser with your name and student number. The adviser will review your file and let you know whether or not you can change your major. Because certain prerequisites are required for certain majors, your request might be denied if you have not completed those prerequisites.

    • 3

Inform the adviser of your former major that you have changed your major --- if your request is approved. The adviser in the Dean's office of your former major needs to change your records to show that you are no longer majoring in that particular subject.
