How to Cite From a Database Inside the Essay

When you quote or paraphrase in your paper, you must cite within the text if you are adhering to MLA (Modern Language Association) or APA (American Psychological Association) guidelines. Bibliographic information should be cited in parentheses directly after you quote from a source. There is no special way to cite an article from a database; format your parenthetical citation as you would if you were citing any other source.

Instructions

  1. APA Style

    • 1

Cite the last name of the author, year of publication and page number in parentheses. According to APA guidelines, your citation should be punctuated in the following format:

      (Jones, 2006, p. 194)

    • 2

Position your citation directly after you quote or paraphrase from the source. For example:

At least one author believes that Nixon "never intended to break so many laws; it just came naturally" (Jones, 2006, p. 194.)

    • 3

Separate your citation into two parts if you mention the author by name in the text. The year of publication should appear in parentheses after the author's name, and the page number should appear in parentheses after the quoted or paraphrased passage. For example:

Jones (2006) believes that Nixon "never intended to break so many laws; it just came naturally" (p. 194.)

    MLA Style

    • 4

Cite the last name of the author and page number in parentheses. No marks of punctuation are necessary in MLA style parenthetical citations. For example:

      (Jones 194)

    • 5

Position your citation directly after you quote or paraphrase from the source. For example:

At least one author believes that Nixon "never intended to break so many laws; it just came naturally" (Jones 194.)

    • 6

Cite only the page number if you mention the author by name in the text. For example:

Jones believes that Nixon "never intended to break so many laws; it just came naturally" (194.)
