How to Cite Passages From a Book in an Essay

Book passages can help emphasize a point made in an essay, while providing the reader with a reference in exact context. However, all work borrowed from other writers must be properly cited to credit the original piece and avoid plagiarism. Each instructor will require a specific documentation format, such as the most common Moden Language Association (MLA) and American Psychological Association (APA) styles that determine how the source is written within the essay. These guidelines need to be followed precisely to correctly credit the author of the passage excerpt.

Instructions

    • 1

Notate the exact source, including all of the relevant information --- the exact title, author publisher, publisher city, published date and pages. Make sure that the cited passage is written exactly, as well.

    • 2

Determine the documentation style that is preferred by your instructor. The instructor may dock points from your score if you write in the wrong format. Review the format for the determined style. For example, MLA and APA styles require in-text citations of all quotations, while CBE and Chicago styles use footnotes.

    • 3

Indent the quoted book passage if it is longer than four lines of text. Otherwise, place the passage in quotations. Do not end a quoted section with a period.

    • 4

Create an in-text citation for required documentation styles, such as MLA or APA formats. Press the space bar once after the quotation mark or indented paragraph then insert the left side of a parenthesis. Either mention the author's name before the quote or place the last name first in the parenthesis. For MLA style, follow the author's last name with the page number. For APA style, follow the author's last name with the date of publication. Close the parenthesis and add a period.

    • 5

Insert a footnote after the quoted section and use the proper citation format verified in your course guide to write the footnote at the bottom of the page. This format is used for Chicago and CBE styles.

    • 6

Create a citations list as the last page of your essay. Follow the format structure outlined in your course guide to properly cite the reference.
