List of Scholarships for People With a Disability

The term disability can encompass a wide range of conditions, from physical impairments to learning issues. Students with disabilities often have to overcome great obstacles in order to attend college. There are a number of organizations that offer financial assistance and scholarships to students with disabilities of all kinds.
  1. Learning Disabilities

    • Learning disabilities encompass a wide range of conditions that students can experience in the classroom, including dyslexia, dysgraphia dyscalculia and dyspraxia. Students with these types of disabilities cannot process information as many other people can.

Scholarships for students with learning disabilities include the Anne Ford Scholarship, which is sponsored by the National Center for Learning Disabilities. This scholarship provides $10,000 for a high school student who acts as a leader and role model for others who face learning disabilities.

Aside from the national organization, many local learning disability organizations, including the Learning Disabilities Association of Arkansas and the Learning Disabilities Association of Iowa, provide scholarships to students from their areas to continue study in higher education.

    Blind and Visually Impaired Students

    • Blind and visually impaired students have trouble processing information in the classroom because they are unable to see it. These students often require special assistance or attend alternative classrooms to make up for their disability.

Scholarships for the blind and visually impaired include the Marion Huber Learning Through Listening Awards, which provide from $2,000 to $6,000 for blind and dyslexic high school seniors who will continue their education beyond high school. Similarly, the American Action Fund Scholarship program provides up to $10,000 for financially struggling undergraduate and graduate students who are legally blind and show exemplary academic achievement and community service.

Like the learning disability scholarships, many local programs, such as the Louise Nacca Memorial Trust in New Jersey, provide assistance to local blind or visually impaired students.

    Autism

    • Autism, as well as other disabilities on the autism spectrum (such as Asperger's Disorder), effects the way students interact and communicate with others. Those who suffer from autism and related disorders often have trouble learning to speak, relating to other people and participating in inventive or imaginative exercises.

The Autism Society of America offers a number of scholarships each year to students who suffer from disorders on the autism spectrum. Categories include awards for outstanding service, literary work and overcoming obstacles.

The Organization for Autism Research also provides schlarships for students with Asperger's disorder or autism who will continue to post-secondary education in a four-year college, two-year college or trade/technical school.
