Minority Accounting Scholarships

According to "The CPA Journal," as of January 2008, only 23 percent of minority accounting graduates are hired by CPA (certified public accountant) firms. Of that amount, 23 percent were of Asian ethnicity, 8 percent were Hispanic or Latino and only 3 percent were African-American. This is why there is a wide array of scholarships offered to minority students of accounting by organizations specializing in accounting and minority education or career advancement.

    American Institute of CPAs Scholarships

    • The American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) offers scholarships for minority accounting students and fellowships for minority doctoral students. The scholarships for minority accounting students are designated to full-time undergraduate students who are declared accounting majors with GPAs of 3.3 or more and have completed at least 30 semester hours. They are also available to graduate students who are currently in five-year (doctoral) accounting, business administration, taxation or finance programs and were accounting undergraduate students, or are currently full-time graduate students enrolled in a master's accounting program. More than $6 million has been awarded to recipients of these scholarships in past years in the amount of $5,000 each. Fellowships are awarded for up to $12,000 once annually to minority students enrolled in doctoral accounting programs who plan on becoming accounting educators and agree to teach at least one course per semester as a teaching assistant or spend at least one quarter of their time as a research assistant.
