High School Photography Scholarships

With the cost of tuition mounting in hard economic times, it is extremely beneficial for high school students to begin the search for scholarship money as early and as often as possible. There are also scholarships available through universities and colleges.
  1. North American Nature Photography Association

    • Since the North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA) began, "it has been dedicated to teaching the next generation of nature photographers." Each year, NANPA selects 10 worthy recipients of a $2,500 scholarship to attend the Annual Summit where field workshops are personally designed for each individual's specialties. In addition to attending this field training, he will also take part in daily instruction from some of the top professional nature photographers within the association. The scholarships cover lodging, airport shuttles, field trip transportation, and Summit registration fees; however, it does not include food or drinks.

      An applicant must be a mature individual at least 14 years old who has a passion for nature photography. Along with the application, submit 10 nature photographs that each include a brief description. These photos must be in jpeg format and no larger than 800 x 600 pixels. Also, a NANPA nomination must be included; contact the office for a contact. Lastly, attach one letter of recommendation from a teacher, coach or mentor.

    Sigma Corporation of America

    • Sigma Corporation is a "leading researcher, developer, manufacturer and service provider of some of the world's most impressive cameras." This well-known corporation offers one winner a $5,000 cash scholarship plus a $1,000 gift card to be used toward the purchase of any Sigma products.

      To qualify for this prize, an applicant must be a U.S. citizen who aspires to study photography and later obtain a degree in a related field. Along with the application, three to five images and an essay of no more than 800 words are expected. This essay should describe the applicant's philosophy of photography, as well as each image included. All images must be in jpeg format and less than 500 KB.

    Brooks Institute Scholarship Program

    • Brooks Institute is a school of arts "designed for anyone who aspires a career in photography, filmmaking, visual journalism or graphic design." They offer one scholarship to a student of a high school with an exemplary visual arts program. An award of up to $12,000 can be presented to a high school senior with a grade point average of at least 3.0 who will begin college courses within a year.

      The applicant must submit an essay that states why he or she has the "passion, vision and excellence," characteristic of Brooks Institute. A reference from a photo teacher should also be submitted in the application process. Finally, at least two pieces of personal work should also be included for review.
