Japanese Government Scholarships

The Japanese government offers scholarships through its Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology for international students to study in Japan. MEXT provides scholarships to students in subjects including humanities, medicine and Japanese studies. Applications and information are found at Japanese embassies or consulates-general. Note that as of April 2010 the average dollar-yen exchange rate is 1 U.S. dollar=92.02 Japanese yen.
  1. Young Leaders Scholarship

    • The Young Leaders Program scholarship offers a monthly stipend of 258,000 yen for one year to university or college graduates who are under the age of 35 in the fields of government, business administration, law, local governance and medical administration.

    Research Student Scholarship

    • Research Student Scholarships offer master's degree students a monthly stipend of 152,000 yen for up to two years for those with at least six months of Japanese language training. The scholarship is offered to research students in the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences.

    Teacher Training Scholarship

    • The Teacher Training Scholarship is offered to university or teacher training college graduates with experience. It provides a monthly stipend of 152,000 yen for master's degree students and 155,000 yen for doctoral students for up to 1 1/2 years.

    Specialized Training and College of Technology Scholarships

    • Additional scholarships are offered to students ages 17 to 21 who have completed secondary school for specialized training and college of technology students. Students receive a monthly stipend of 125,000 yen for up to four years for technology students and up to three years for specialized training students.

    Undergraduate Student Scholarship

    • The Japanese government also offers an Undergraduate Student Scholarship for students 17 to 21 who have completed their secondary school and are eligible for entering a university. Students planning to study social science and humanities, natural science, agricultural studies, medicine and dentistry receive stipends of 125,000 yen monthly with at least one year of Japanese language study for up to five years.

    Japanese Studies Scholarship

    • The Japanese Studies Scholarship is offered to undergraduate university students ages 18 to 29. Students majoring in Japanese studies, which includes Japanese language, culture and affairs, receive a monthly stipend of 125,000 yen for one year.
