Rhodes University Scholarships

Rhodes University is an internationally-recognized university in Grahamstown, South Africa. It is one of only four in the Eastern Cape Province, and the fourth-oldest university in the country. Rhodes University opened in 1904 and has approximately 7,000 students enrolled each year. Although the university offers very few scholarships to undergraduates, Rhodes University offers several postgraduate scholarships for students who may be in need of financial assistance or work experience in a desired field.
  1. Percy Qoboza

    • The Percy Qoboza scholarship, sponsored by Media 24, is awarded annually to a postgraduate student who studied new media. Selected students spend June working at City Press, actively contributing to new media lab projects. Students gain hands-on experience in the media field, network, and guidance from trained professionals. Students also develop digital and media skills through training with media equipment. To apply, students must submit a completed application, including grade point average, extracurricular activities, and areas of interest. Students must also provide a phone number and address for two professional contacts, and complete a statement indicating interest in the Percy Qoboza scholarship.

    Convergence Partner

    • The Convergence Partner scholarship is awarded annually to one student, generally a female. The scholarship is sponsored by the Convergence Partners Foundation along with the Lion Telecom Trust. According to the school's website, this scholarship aims to improve the life of a formerly disadvantaged South African, who is interested in information and communication technologies, or ICT, and expressionism through media. To apply, students must submit an academic transcript, a curriculum vitae, a letter of reference, two contacts, a deposit scholarship fee, and a letter of application indicating an interest in journalism.

    Aggrey Klaaste

    • The "Sowetan/Sunday World" newspaper and Rhodes University sponsor the Aggrey Klaaste scholarship. It is awarded annually to a postgraduate student who has participated in school or campus media or writing, has an exemplary academic record, and is 30 years of age or younger. The "Sowetan/Sunday World" selected the winner. Successful applicants have a four-week internship with the "Sowetan/Sunday World", beginning in December. Students may also continue working for the paper through the winter (June/July) holiday, according to the program's website.
