University Students & Depression

According to Times Online, around one-fourth of college students in the United Kingdom suffer from some form of mental illness including depression. Although this statistic is only specific to one country, this high number demonstrates a need for a better understanding of depression among university students.
  1. Causes

    • Students in college may suffer depression for a number of reasons. If they are having difficulty coping with the changes associated with university life, this could be a cause. In addition, the lifestyle of a student, such as poor sleeping patterns and eating habits, can contribute to depression. Bad grades and other academic stress, such as from tests or homework, may also contribute to depression.

    Support

    • Not all schools offer mental health services, but for students suffering from depression, this is a good place to start looking for help. Counselors and mental health advisers are usually available to help evaluate students suffering from depression. Tutors are also available to help students understand the coursework better and can help alleviate stress.

    Outside Treatments

    • If this type of service is not offered at the university, students can seek help counseling in their local areas or find friends whom they can talk to about what they’re going through. In cases of severe depression, professional counseling may be necessary. A psychologist can provide counseling or therapy to help the students work through some of the issues they are dealing with. In addition, a psychiatrist may be necessary to prescribe antidepressants.

    Misconceptions

    • Times Online describes one common misconception about university depression in an article, “Depression at University.” According to the article, many are under the misunderstanding that students are happy and carefree and don’t know the meaning of hard work. In reality, many students are under a lot of stress and can be hurt by these mistaken notions and perceive something as wrong with them for feeling the way they do.

    Warning

    • Never start any treatment for depression without consulting a mental health professional first. If you or someone has suicidal thoughts or is contemplating suicide, you should seek immediate psychiatric help.
