Grants for Social Work Students

Social workers provide a wide range of mental health services to people in a variety of settings. Students who are training to become social workers are eligible for grants that cover academic expenses and field placements. Students can apply for these awards from industry organizations and schools that offer this field of study.
  1. Judith Holm Memorial Student Awards Program

    • The Center for Clinical Social Work sponsors the Judith Holm Memorial Student Awards Program for social work students in master's programs. Five cash grants of $1,000 are awarded to students who submit the best academic papers on clinical social work. The panel of judges includes faculty members from social work schools around the nation, center directors, and selected practicing social workers. Applicants must be in their final year of their degree program and in good academic standing. Submitted papers must be endorsed by the student's faculty sponsor and field sponsor. Submission can be made via email or postal mail.

    Consuelo W. Gosnell Memorial MSW Scholarship

    • The National Association of Social Workers sponsors the Consuelo W. Gosnell Memorial MSW Scholarship for students who are committed to working with Native American and Hispanic communities in the United States. Up to ten students receive an award for one year ranging from $1,000 to $4,000. Students must be NASW members and gain acceptance into an accredited MSW school. The award is renewable. A minimum 3.0 GPA is also required. Students must submit a biography, two references, transcripts, and a letter from an advisor if they are applying for renewal.

    Verne LaMarr Lyons Memorial MSW Scholarship

    • NASW also sponsors the Verne LaMarr Lyons Memorial MSW Scholarship for students who work in are or interested in practicing in African-American communities. One $2,000 award is given each year to a student who is a member of NASW. All applicants must gain acceptance into an accredited MSW school and have a minimum 3.0 GPA. Students must submit a biography, two references, transcripts, and a letter from an advisor if they are applying for renewal. The award is renewable.

    University of Michigan Global Social Work Grant

    • The University of Michigan awards funds to students who are interested in social work research or volunteer work abroad. Students enrolled in Michigan's School of Social Work receive up to $3,000 and must be accepted into a special studies or field placement overseas. Applicants must submit a detailed budget of their trip, a project description, and signatures from a faculty advisor and field liaison.
