Scholarships for Special Education Certification

There are a number of scholarships that are available to help college students obtain the training they need to be certified as special education teachers. Often, special education scholarships are offered through the Department of Education at institutions of higher learning. Some private organizations offer scholarships to special ed students. Some states even have tuition forgiveness programs, through which a student can obtain a full-tuition scholarship in return for service.
  1. NAJA Graduate Scholarship Program

    • The National Association of Junior Auxiliaries makes scholarship money available to students in special education through its Graduate Scholarship Program. These grants are awarded in varying amounts. In order to be eligible, a student must be planning to work directly with children, and he must be a U.S. citizen and a full-time graduate student. Also, the student must be a permanent resident of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee or Texas. The annual deadline for application is February 1.

    SFSU Scholarships

    • The College of Education at San Francisco State University offers a number of scholarships to students pursuing a degree in special education. The William L. Neer Scholarship is awarded every fall semester in amounts ranging from $200 to $500 to a graduate student with a concentration in visual impairment or orientation and mobility. The Dorothy B. Lucas Special Education Scholarship is awarded twice a year to a special education major who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher. This scholarship is awarded in the amount of $2,500.

    Illinois Special Education Teacher Tuition Waiver Program

    • The Illinois Student Assistance Commission provides full-tuition scholarships to Illinois residents pursuing degrees in special education in the state of Illinois. In return, a student must teach special education for a minimum of two years at a school in Illinois upon attainment of her degree. In order to be eligible, a student must be a U.S. citizen and resident of the state of Illinois, and she must be enrolled in a special education program at one of 12 eligible four-year institutions in Illinois.
