Non Traditional Teacher Scholarships

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, nontraditional students are usually older than the average college student, are often part-time students and may have full-time jobs or families. They may take their classes in nontraditional settings, such as distance or evening classes. Nontraditional students may begin or resume their college education to qualify for promotions or to prepare for career advancement. They may be college graduates who are switching careers, perhaps taking teacher education classes to become certified teachers.
  1. Troops to Teachers

    • The Troops for Teachers (TTT) program, a U.S. Department of Defense program, awards financial assistance to help eligible military personnel transition to careers as certified public school teachers. Participants choose one of two plans: a stipend of up to $5,000 for teacher certification costs for a 3-year commitment to teach in a high-need school; the second plan offers a $10,000 bonus for a 3-year commitment to teach in a high-need school with a high number of low-income students. Eligible active-duty and reserve personnel of any branch of military service who meet additional requirements may register with the TTT program by contacting their base Education Center or Navy College Office or by downloading a registration form from the program website.

    Tips

    • Many states have special programs that provide scholarships and other benefits to student enrolled in teacher education programs who agree to teach in the state for a number of years. Examples are the Teach Mississippi Program and the Mississippi Critical Needs Teacher Scholarships. State lateral entry, or nontraditional teacher licensing programs, often provide scholarships to college graduates for transition to teaching careers.
