Canadian Government Grant Programs

The Canadian government makes a variety of grant programs available to its citizens. Types of grants include funds for Canadian artists, scholarships for students, and home improvement grants. Canadian citizens should keep in mind that they may need to fit certain criteria to qualify for government grants.
  1. FACTOR Emerging Artist Program

    • The Canadian government provides money for Canadian musicians through the Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent on Recordings Emerging Artists Program. Funds administered under this program may provide for up to 50 percent of a musician's budget for producing an album, up to a maximum contribution of $50,000. To be eligible, an applicant must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant, and must control the copyright for the material being recorded. In addition, they must have previously sold a certain number of units, depending on the genre of music they are recording, but must not have sold more than 150,000 copies of any one sound recording.     The Ontario Student Assistance Program

    • The Canadian government provides educational grants to students in Ontario through the Ontario Student Assistance Program. This program provides up to $360 per week for single students attending college in Canada, and up to $560 per week for students who are married, or who are single parents. Students from Ontario who are attending school outside of Canada are also eligible for a maximum of $210 per week. To be eligible, a student must be from Ontario, must be enrolled in a program at least 12 weeks long that leads to degree or certification, and must demonstrate financial need.     CMHC Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Program for Persons with Disabilities

    • The Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation provides grants to homeowners and landlords through the Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Program for Persons with Disabilities. This program provides homeowners with a maximum of between $16,000 and $24,000 per unit, and landlords with a maximum of up to between $24,000 and $36,000 per unit, depending on which area of Canada a structure is located. In order to be eligible, a structure must be inhabited by one or more persons with a disability, and the proposed modifications must be reasonably related to the person's disability.
