You can find scholarships for American Indian women entering fields where they are traditionally underrepresented, such as dentistry and business administration, through the American Association of University Women. Corporations, organizations and governmental agencies provide scholarships for Native Americans going into the fields of library science, archaeology, engineering, teaching and natural sciences.
  1. American Indian Scholarships

    • Scholarships for American Indians can be used to attend either private or public universities.

      The American Indian College Fund (AICF) awards scholarships to approximately 6,000 American Indian students annually. You can use these scholarships at public and private universities. The AICF focuses on tribal colleges located mostly in economically depressed areas, and it sponsors students at tribal colleges in over 30 states, including Washington state, Alaska, Arizona, New Mexico and South Dakota. The Association on American Indian Affairs offers a scholarship program for both undergraduate and graduate-level studies. It grants eight scholarships per year, to students with at least 1/4 Indian blood from federally recognized tribes. The American Indian Science and Engineering Society offers several scholarships in the areas of computer science, math, medicine and natural sciences. The Daughters of the American Revolution offer the Frances Crawford Marvin American Indian Scholarship, which is available to undergraduate students attending two- or four-year colleges who have a 3.0 GPA or higher and Native American blood.

    Grants for American Indian Females

    • Specific grants assist Indian women in becoming doctors, dentists and business administrators.

      The American Association of University Women (AAUW) offers scholarships to minority women in the selected professions of law (JD), medicine (MD, DO) and business administration (MBA), as they are underrepresented in those fields. The AAUW also offers support for graduate-level women students, as well as career-development grants for women with four-year degrees who want to further their professional goals. The AAUW provides community actions grants, which are awarded to individuals and organizations for nondegree research projects and innovative programs that promote education and equality for women, and it offers other funding opportunities solely for women. Scholarships for Minority Women has a database of 150 scholarships sponsored by corporations, nonprofit organizations, and the U.S. government. Its listed resources include scholarships from Microsoft and Walmart, and National Merit Scholarships and Future Farmers of America Awards.

    American Indian Scholarship Lists

    • Scholarships for Native Americans support their study of history, library science and technology.

      The National Indian Education Association has an extensive list of scholarships available on its website. The list includes funding for high school through graduate study in college. The Saint Paul Public Schools Native Indian Education Program lists over 50 scholarships specifically for American Indians. Francisco Alberto Tomei Torres, PhD, has compiled an online list of scholarships for Native American students, from organizations such as the Wildlife Conservation Society and the Society for American Archaeology, in addition to governmental agencies including the U.S. Indian Health Service. The National Indian Law Library also offers a wide selection of grant and scholarship search opportunities, including funding databases, links to tribal assistance, and several links to library-science grants for Indian students, such as the American Indian Library Foundation's Library School Scholarship.
