American Indian Grants for College

Native American students who are registered members of tribes recognized by the federal government or a state are eligible for grants from nonprofit organizations, state funds and tribal organizations. Grants range from awards supporting students with full-tuition waivers to those that are tied to specific institutions or types of colleges.
  1. Michigan Indian Tuition Waiver Grant

    • Michigan residents who are no less than 25 percent Native American and attend a public community college or university in the state can have the entire cost of their tuition waived. Applicants must have legal residence in Michigan for one year and qualify for admission as full-time, part-time or summer school students at a state school. Students must provide proof of eligibility with Bureau of Indian Affairs or Tribe blood quantum certification. Awards are for one year and are renewable.

    The Pokagon Higher Education Technology Stipend

    • The Pokagon Tribe in Michigan gives a $600 award to students enrolled in a degree program, as of 2010. The money is to be used for the purchase of technology such as software, calculators and Internet usage in support of obtaining higher education. Incoming freshmen and students already in college are eligible for the grant.

    Western Carolina University, The American Indian Grant

    • Western Carolina University awards grants to Native Americans who are legal residents of North Carolina. Recipients must provide proof of membership in a tribe recognized by North Carolina or the federal government. Grant amounts vary depending on financial need after students fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid form.

    Mary Alice Peterson American Indian Grant

    • The Alpha Sigma Tau National Foundation awards the Mary Alice Peterson American Indian Grant. The amount of the grant is $250, as of 2010. It is needs-based and applicants must be recommended by their schools' financial aid officers or a member of Alpha Sigma Tau sorority. An applicant must submit a transcript, a recommendation from a college professor and from his school's financial aid office.

    Presbyterian Church Native American Education Grant

    • The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) awards a grant to registered members of state or federally recognized tribes. Applicants must be full-time students at an accredited college or university. They must not have any other degrees and be undergraduates. A 2.5 grade point average is required. Preference is given to those with financial need. Preference is also granted to members of the Presbyterian Church. However, church membership is not required. Awards are up to $1,500 per year and are renewable, as of 2010.
