The Hearing & Visually Handicapped Student Grant is an award for Wisconsin residents with severe or profound hearing or vision impairment. Students must have financial need and be enrolled at least part time at a Wisconsin nonprofit technical college, tribal college, or independent college or university. Out-of-state schools may qualify if the disability prevents the student from attending a Wisconsin school. The enrolling institution determines financial need, and a physician must certify the degree of physical impairment. High school students are not eligible for the grant that ranges from $250 to $1,800. Nearly $100,000 is awarded each year to more than 60 students. Students may receive up to $1,800 per year for up to 10 semesters.

Students registered at the University of California Berkeley who are eligible for financial aid and have permanent disabilities may apply for the Disabled Student Program (DSP). This assists students in obtaining specialized equipment or assistive technology to help them gain physical independence or increase the ways in which instructional material is available to them. Students must provide documentation of disability and complete an assistive technology assessment to verify the need. The award granted each academic year, for a maximum amount of $1,200, may be used for software or equipment that helps students gain greater independence or assists them in obtaining access to instructional material. Examples of items for which the DSP grant applies are devices to provide communication for persons without speech, peripheral computer devices, and computer applications, plus assistive equipment for the vision or hearing impaired, and wheelchair accommodations.
