Obtaining Grants for Barbering

People interested in making a living as a barber can take advantage of various grants to help pay for credentials needed to enter the field. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated in 2004 that about 790,000 people held barber jobs. The Bureau said 48 percent of these barbers were self-employed.

Barbers generally earn from $15,000 to $30,000 per year.
  1. Requirements to Become a Barber

    • The widespread standard in the United States requires barbers to receive and maintain a license to practice, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Each state has its own qualifications and prerequisites, but most require one to graduate from a licensed barber school and be at least 16 years old.

Cost of Barber Education and Types of Grants

    • Barber school costs vary based on area and other factors, range from $6,500 to $10,000 and last from nine months to two years. A number of grants, including the federal Pell Grant and federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant can help alleviate these costs, offering as little as $100 to over $4,000. The amount is based on income and the tuition cost.

    How to Apply for Grants

    • To apply for grants, fill out a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form. The application asks for the names of the schools the applicant might attend, and will provide a copy of the completed form to each school. Once submitted and processed, the applicant will receive notification about grant eligibility and how much money he will receive.
