The widespread standard in the United States requires barbers to receive and maintain a license to practice, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Each state has its own qualifications and prerequisites, but most require one to graduate from a licensed barber school and be at least 16 years old.
Barber school costs vary based on area and other factors, range from $6,500 to $10,000 and last from nine months to two years. A number of grants, including the federal Pell Grant and federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant can help alleviate these costs, offering as little as $100 to over $4,000. The amount is based on income and the tuition cost.
To apply for grants, fill out a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form. The application asks for the names of the schools the applicant might attend, and will provide a copy of the completed form to each school. Once submitted and processed, the applicant will receive notification about grant eligibility and how much money he will receive.
