Duke Energy offers the Duke Energy Scholars scholarship program to benefit the children of current and former Duke Energy employees. The program makes 15 four-year scholarships worth a maximum of $5,000 annually available each year. Duke Energy also funds five $1,000 scholarships. The scholarships may be applied to undergraduate students enrolling in two-year or four-year colleges and universities in the United States and Canada, including technical schools. The program awards scholarships primarily based on merit, but also considers applicants' academic achievements, references, involvement in their community, and financial need.

The Duke University Graduate School and the Duke University School of Medicine Department of Immunology offer a new fellowship designed to foster diversity among graduate students in the immunology program. The Diversity Enhancement Fellowships accept their inaugural students in Fall 2010. Eligible applicants include students with disabilities, students of races underrepresented in the field and financially and culturally disadvantaged students. Successful applicants receive a $5,000 award for each of the first four years of their graduate career. In addition to funding minority education, the program seeks to give minority students an environment in which they can launch productive careers.

The Hispanic Scholarship Fund and Procter & Gamble Company collaborate to fund Latino students' efforts to earn degrees in mathematics, engineering, technology and science. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States, must be of Hispanic descent and must live in one of the eligible regions. These regions include Ohio, Texas, North Carolina, Kentucky and Indiana. The program requires a minimum grade-point average of 3.0 and applicants must plan to enroll in a full-time college degree-awarding program that falls into the area of science, technology, engineering or mathematics. Students must submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and attend a U.S.-accredited college or university located in the United States or a U.S. territory.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill underwrites the Carolina Postdoctoral Program for Faculty Diversity, an effort to provide promising minority candidates with two-year postdoctoral research appointments. Student researchers will only teach one class per fiscal year, instead devoting the majority of their time to research. The program awards stipends in the amount of $36,282 per year and provides additional funding for travel and research needs. Eligible applicants must have a doctorate degree completed no more than four years prior to applying to the program. Successful applicants will demonstrate potential to gain tenure at competitive research universities.
